Ennio Morricone était plus qu'un des grands compositeurs de musique de film – il était un des plus grands compositeurs au monde, point. Pour moi, son travail se tient aux côtés de ceux de Bach, Mozart, Debussy, Ellington et Stravinsky en accomplissant cette rare fusion du cœur et de l'esprit. Oserions nous comparer les cinq notes de son « cri de coyote » dans « Le Bon, la Brute et le Truand » aux quatre notes de l'ouverture de la Cinquième Symphonie de Beethoven ? La musique de Morricone est tout aussi intemporelle.

Morricone, qui est mort lundi à 91 ans, a été une influence et une inspiration depuis que j'ai découvert son travail étant adolescent en 1967. « The Ecstasy of Gold » du « Bon, la Brute et le Truand » m'a frappé avec la même puissance que des chefs d’œuvre modernistes comme « Le Sacre du Printemps », la Quatrième Symphonie de Ives et « Arcana » de Varèse, ce morceau partage leur invention rythmique complexe, leur monde sonore fouillé et leur luxuriante étendue romantique.

Embrassant les envolées lyriques de son héritage Italien, le don de Morricone pour la chanson était extraordinaire. Il était de ces musiciens qui pouvaient créer une mélodie inoubliable avec une poignée de notes. Son savoir faire méticuleux et son oreille pour l'orchestration, l'harmonie, la mélodie et le rythme résultaient en une musique parfaitement équilibrée. Comme chez tous les grands maîtres compositeurs, chaque note était là pour une raison. Changez une seule note, un rythme, un silence, et il y a diminution.

En ayant des racines à la fois dans la musique populaire et dans l'avant garde, Morricone était un innovateur, et il triomphait de chaque nouveau challenge avec une approche nouvelle, conservant une curiosité et un sens de l'émerveillement enfantins. Il était toujours ouvert à essayer de nouveaux sons, de nouveaux instruments, de nouvelles combinaisons -  puisant rarement deux fois au même endroit.

Il était un homme intègre qui ne supportait pas beaucoup la bêtise. Les récits de ses réponses à certaines suggestions ineptes de réalisation sont légendaires, incluant une de mes préférées : « Dans l'histoire de la musique, rien de tel ne s'est jamais produit, et ne se produira jamais ». Il vivait une vie relativement simple dans un bel appartement à Rome, se levant à 4h30 du matin, faisant des promenades et composant à son bureau pendant des heures jusqu'au bout. Il voyageait peu.

Ce que nous devons comprendre, c'est que Morricone était un magicien du son. Il avait une habileté déroutante pour associer des instruments de manière originale. Ocarina, fouet ( slapstick ), sifflements, bruits de guitare électrique, grognements, sons électroniques et et hululements dans la nuit : tout était bienvenu pour obtenir un effet dramatique. Dans les années 60, la guitare électrique était au centre de sa palette, et il était capable de l'incorporer dans une multitude de contextes inhabituels avec un flair incroyable. Dans « Svegliati e Uccidi » il demande au guitariste d'imiter le « rat-a-tat-tat » d'une mitrailleuse avec le ressort de la reverb sur son amplificateur, et sa directive au musicien de « sonner comme une lance » a engendré un des sons de guitare les plus intenses jamais enregistrés, dans « Il était une fois dans l'Ouest ».

Sa maîtrise d'un vaste éventail de genres et d'instruments ont fait de lui un musicien en avance sur son temps. Il pouvait explorer des techniques approfondies sur une embouchure de trompette dans un contexte free improvisation le matin, écrire un arrangement big band séduisant pour un chanteur pop l'après midi, et composer une bande originale de film enflammée le soir. Ce genre d'ouverture continue d'être la voie du futur – et a été un modèle formateur pour moi.

Morricone est plus connu pour son travail avec le cinéma, mais nous ne devons jamais oublier son large catalogue de musique « absolue » - ses compositions classiques. Là, la musique vient directement de son cœur. Et pourtant, ce qu'il a accompli dans le monde restreint et exigeant de la musique de film est tout simplement miraculeux. Là, son immense imagination, son oreille affûtée pour la dramaturgie, son lyrisme profond, son sens de l'humour malicieux et son immense cœur trouvent leur voix dans une musicalité magnifique et maîtrisée. La liberté artistique était son credo, son goût impeccable et son sens inné de l'énergie, de l'espace et du temps étaient palpables. Son travail a magnifié chaque film qu'il a mis en musique.

Un de mes plus chers souvenirs est d’être allé le voir à une session d'enregistrement à New York, autour de 1986. Il était, comme toujours, un gentleman : élégant, gracieux, et plus qu'aimable avec un jeune fan qui était intimidé face à son héros. Nous avons parlé par le biais d'un interprète pour la majorité de notre conversation, mais il m'a pris à part pour quelques moments et a partagé avec moi quelques conseils de composition quant au travail avec le cinéma. Je n'oublierai jamais ce qu'il m'a dit ce jour là : « Oublie le film. Pense au disque de la bande originale. »

Beaucoup de compositeurs se demandent, et se soucient même, de savoir si leur travail leur survivra – si on se souviendra de leur contribution ou si on chérira leur musique. Morricone n'a rien à craindre de ce côté là. Son travail a été adopté, il a accompli ce rare équilibre d'être une influence profonde pour le monde des musiciens et pour la société dans son ensemble. Ses aventures sonores vivent de leur propre mérite, à la fois dans le contexte des films pour lesquelles elles existent, et en termes de pure musique. C'était sa magie.

Il était plus qu'une figure de la musique. Il était une icône culturelle. Il était le maestro – et je l'aimais avec tendresse.

Les Maudits presents three dynamic chamber pieces inspired by heroic ‘cursed’ artists of French culture. Demolishing all boundaries and pushing the artistic envelope beyond all expectations Ubu is one of Zorn’s greatest and most outrageous creations-- bizarre musical portrait of the subversive writer Alfred Jarry and his powerful Pataphyisical figure Ubu. The Ubu plays were a powerful precursor to many of the European avant-garde experiments of the early 20th century (Dada, Surrealism, Theatre of the Absurd, Futurism, postmodernism) and Zorn captures the vulgar, rebellious, gluttonous, childish and revolutionary spirit of Ubu in this major new studio composition.
Accompanying this work are two pieces performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble under the direction of David Fulmer. A concerto grosso in three movements inspired by the work of radical French poet Charles Baudelaire, and Oviri (‘savage' in Tahitian) a touching elegy to Paul Gauguin, the influential and complex artist who helped redefine painting in the 20th century.

John Zorn: Calculus [#8371]
Calculus is another radical step forward for Zorn—two major 20-minute long-form compositions scored for piano trio. Featuring the incredible young pianist Brian Marsella along with the dynamic rhythm section of Trevor Dunn and Kenny Wollesen, this is a complex and exhilarating display of instrumental virtuosity at its most extreme. Drawing upon all of Zorn’s musical obsessions, from thorny atonality to touching minimalism, burning jazz, funk, folk, exotica, ambient, noise and more, this is some of the most ambitious and expansive music ever created for jazz piano trio. Passionately performed by three core members of Zorn’s inner circle Calculus is an outrageous and kaleidocopic journey into the unknown!
