A Film In 15 Scenes - Compte-rendu
Un membre de la zorn-list fait un compte-rendu de la projection du film dont Zorn a écrit le script, A Film In 15 Scenes. Il semble qu'une sortie en DVD soit prévue pour l'années prochaine.
« Yesterday evening I attended a screening of John Zorn: A Film In 15 Scenes at the Yerba Buena Center For The Arts in San Francisco. The film actually consists of four short films, all interpreting a script Zorn wrote comprising 254 shots split into 15 scenes. Four directors - Henry Hills, Gobolux, Lewis Klahr and Joey Izzo - each collaborated with Zorn to film their interpretation of the script.
The film first screened at the New York Film Festival in October and you can read Zorn's detailed notes on the film at the festival's web site - http://filmlinc.com/films/on-sale/john-zorn-a-film-in-15-scenes. At yesterday's screening Joey Izzo was in attendance and before the film he briefly spoke about collaborating with Zorn and Ikue Mori on his version of the script.
Since the films are all rather abstract I won't attempt to describe them much, but I definitely enjoyed seeing the different treatments. Henry Hills, Gobolux and Joey Izzo's versions had much in common in that they all primarily used film clips to realize the scenes, though the individual works were vastly different. Lewis Klahr's film stood apart as it used animation extensively, giving it a different feel from the other trio of films.
I highly recommend that you take a few minutes to read the notes at the link above and see the film if you have the opportunity. Hopefully a DVD edition is forthcoming on Tzadik in the new year.
On a related note, the notes describe what occurs at Theater Of Musical Optics performances. I was fascinated to learn the the performances continue to this day, and are only attended by ~7 people each year. How interesting!»
